New Delhi: The government on Tuesday said near-miss incidents by planes rose 40% in 2005 as additional flights and an increasing number of airlines strained the capabilities of the air traffic controllers.
As many as 21 so-called “air miss” incidents occurred last year, compared with 15 in 2004, civil aviation minister Praful Patel said in a statement to Parliament. As many as 13 such incidents took place in 2003, he said.
Of the 21 incidents, only two are categorized as “risk of collision”, the statement said. The government also categorized the incidents as “safety not assured” and “no risk of collision, or risk not determined”, the statement said. Ten of the 21 near miss incidents last year were due to the error of the air traffic control, Mr Patel said.
Jet Airways, the biggest domestic airline, was involved in eight incidents and state-owned Indian Airlines, the second-biggest domestic carrier, was involved in five, the statement said.
