Low-cost airlines garner 27% share

New Delhi: The start-ups are soaring high in the Indian skies. The group of three start-up airlines - Air Deccan, Kingfisher Airlines and SpiceJet - opened the new year with a big bang, cornering nearly 27% share of the domestic skies in January 2006.
According to latest passenger carriage figures with the directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA), the combined share of the three start-ups is nearly as much as the state-owned behemoth Indian Airlines' share alone in January.
While Indian ended the month with a 25% share of the domestic skies, arch rival and market leader Jet Airways controlled 34.7% of the market pie. Air Sahara continued to maintain its share of 11%. On the other hand, Air Deccan overtook Air Sahara to become the third largest airline in India with a 13.3% share of the air traveller market, while Vijay Mallya's Kingfisher ended the month with a 7.6% share and SpiceJet took 6% of the market.
