Malaysia Airlines to stop services to Ahmedabad, Kolkata by June

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia Airlines said on Monday it will cease operating seven international routes by June as part of its plans to return to profitability. The carrier will no longer fly from Kuala Lumpur to Ahmedabad and Kolkata in India, Xian in China, Padang in Indonesia and Manchester and Vienna in Europe, it said in a statement.
It will also cease flights from Kuching, in Malaysia's Sarawak state, on Borneo island to Pontianak in Indonesia, the statement added.
The move is part of route revamps that are expected to reduce the airline's losses by up to 303 million ringgit (US$80 million; euro66 million) this year. Last month, Malaysia Airlines reported a loss of 1.26 billion ringgit (US$339 million; euro283 million) in the 2005 financial year, blaming it mostly on higher fuel costs. The airline had made a profit of 216.9 million ringgit (US$58.46 million; euro48 million) a year earlier.
