Airports to be upgraded for next generation jets

New Delhi: Most airports being built in the metros and non-metro cities of India will be equipped with equipment and systems capable of handling larger aircraft like the Airbus A-380.
'The biggest challenge is not only to get these airports ready on time but to ensure these airports are able to handle the new generation of large aircraft like the Airbus A-380,' Civil Aviation Secretary Ajay Prasad said Tuesday.
Speaking at a seminar on the theme 'Modernising Indian airports - the challenges head', Prasad said that while work on metro, non-metro and greenfield airports across the country would be completed according to existing deadlines, their managements will have to work increasingly hard to meet the new challenges that will crop up with the immense growth in civil aviation.
Against a backdrop of none of the metro airports being capable of handling aircraft like the A-380, Prasad said the first challenge would be the physical and technical one of handling the new generation of passenger jets.
Prasad also announced that the greenfield airports at Bangalore and Hyderabad were progressing in a time bound manner and in all likelihood, the two airports would be commissioned by April 2008.
