Secunderabad: With work on the proposed international airport at Shamshabad having just taken off, the air traffic to Hyderabad has gone up in the recent times.
The Begumpet airport is bracing up to face this traffic for the next two to three years till the new airport becomes functional. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has spent nearly Rs 20 crore for creating new infrastructure — 5 night parking bays, an aero bridge and a new car parking — at the Begumpet airport.
With more airlines making a foray into this sector, air traffic has increased tremendously. Work on the five new night parking bays is in progress at the airport. The bays are expected to be ready by mid-April. Similarly, an aero bridge is under construction. Four aero bridges are already in place at the airport.
Airport director R K Singla said, "Even in case of a delay in the completion of the Shamshabad international airport, the Begumpet airport will be in a position to cater to the increased demand." The international airport would be completed by 2008. The works being taken up solely cater to the next 2-3 years.
