Mumbai: Juhu aerodrome and Aarey Colony have finally been shortlisted for installation of the Doppler radar, which will greatly augment weather forecasting operations. The likely winner is Juhu, as minister for civil aviation Praful Patel has shown enthusiasm about sanctioning aerodrome land owned by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
The meteorology department had been on the lookout for a place for over a year to install the radar. The installation process has already been delayed by over eight months.
A Doppler radar can give an accurate weather forecast over a 24-hour cycle. While the current system updates information every three hours, the radar can give an update every minute, and it can cover the whole of Maharashtra and Gujarat. In India, Kolkata, Chennai and Vizag already have the device.
The Met department had initially shortlisted four places — Worli, Aarey Colony, Juhu and Kalina in Santacruz — for installing the radar.
