Pune: The runway at the Pune airport at Lohegaon that has seen a tremendous increase in civilian flights recently, will be refurbished as the Air Force has decided to go in for resurfacing. Work is scheduled to begin within a year and it is expected to take at least three-four months for completion.
If on the positive side the much-needed resurfacing will ensure better landing facilities, on the flip side it will hamper the airport operations. Apart from the Sukhois and Jaguars of the Air Force, the Pune Airport has seen a huge surge in the number of civilian flights in the recent months with 35 planes touching down daily.
This apart, there are two international flights to Dubai and Singapore every week. This led to ‘‘runway fatigue’’ and the airport had been closed for all traffic on Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm for emergency repairs. Once the runway has been resurfaced, the ban on Saturday flights will be lifted. Additional work like extension of the runway and apron area is also likely to take place along with the resurfacing.
