New DelhiI: On Friday, IGI airport started using its two runways simultaneously.
The trial run lasted for an hour (11.30 am to 12.30 pm) and saw 35 flight movements (both landings and takeoffs), up from the maximum 25 movements the airport could handle using one runway at a time. The main runway was used by international flights and domestic arrivals. The secondary runway was used by domestic airliners to take off.
"From Saturday, the simultaneous use will be extended to four hours — two hours in morning and two in evening. We will get feedback from airlines and others. The timings will be extended," said Airports Authority of India (AAI) chairman K Ramalingam.
Initially, the simultaneous use will be during busy hours of 10 am to noon and 4pm to 6 pm. Once a vital taxiway that links the main runway to the domestic terminal side and some other links are ready by May-end and initial difficulties are ironed out, the system could be used 24 hours a day from May-end.
