Small-town airports to take wing with pvt sector help

New Delhi: In a move that may provide great momentum to regional air connectivity, the government plans to allow private sector players to develop greenfield airports at all towns with populations over 2.5 lakh.
Coming at a time when the controversy over the modernisation of Delhi and Mumbai airports with private sector participation is still raging, the move would open up huge opportunities for companies engaged in infrastructure development.
Incorporated in the ‘greenfield airport development policy’ which is now being revived, the proposal to allow the private sector a major role in developing small airports is finding support from various departments like the finance ministry and Planning Commission.
The project would be put through international competitive bidding for selecting the right partner. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will have a key role to play in providing technical expertise, besides manning air traffic control (ATC).
