Ottawa: The retired judge who will preside over a public inquiry into the Air India disaster will take home between $400 and $600 an hour for his services.
The Conservative government announced Monday that retired Supreme Court of Canada justice John Major will preside over the commission that will look into the police investigation of the 1985 bombings that killed 331 people.
The fees, the same as an experienced, well-known lawyer would fetch, are detailed in a decree adopted Monday.
In addition to the hourly rate, the government will cover travel and lodging expenses for the commissioner when he travels outside his home city.
If Major works 30 hours per week, at $400 an hour his salary will cost $12,000 a week.
In comparison, retired justice John Gomery, who presided over the recent sponsorship inquiry, earned the same salary as he earned as a high court judge, as well as travel and lodging costs.
