Kochi: The new Aircraft maintenance hangar of the Cochin International Airport Ltd, being built at a cost of Rs 35 crore, will be ready by May next year.
This would go a long way in cutting maintenance costs, V J Kurien, CIAL's Managing Director, told reporters here.
Cochin International Aviation Service ltd, a new company, has been formed for the maintenance of the hangar, he said.
Out of the total investment of rs 35 crore, CIAL will hold equity of 51 per cent share and 49 per cent will be given to Licensed Aircraft Maintenance engineers. The total equity will be rs 20 crore and CIAL's contribition will be rs 10.2 crore. About rs 15 crore will be taken as term loan, he said.
At present only Air India, Indian, Jet Airways have maintenance hangars in the country.
CIAL also has plans to do away with the landing charges by 2012, which would make it the first airport in the world to abolish landing charges.
