Shillong: Air Chief Marshal S P Tyagi on Friday admitted that there is an increase in the number of pilots leaving the Indian Air Force (IAF) as compared to 10 years ago, attributing it to the flourishing civil aviation sector.
“Some people want to leave (the IAF) for a better salary. But the number is very small. Not a single person who has left ever told me that he is going to fly commercial aircraft. All of them cite personal reasons,” Tyagi told reporters during an informal chat at the Eastern Air Command in Shillong, Meghalaya.
“But there is no need to panic,” he said. “When the IAF can afford to release a pilot, it does so. It does not release a pilot when it cannot do so.”
The IAF provides ‘quality of life’ besides a good salary. “Still, if someone wants to earn more, no one can prevent him.”
He denied that IAF pilots are a ‘demotivated’ lot.
