New Delhi: Civil aviation minister Praful Patel is convening a meeting with chief ministers of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu to finalise the roadmap - including the issue of involving private sector - for upgrading airports in Kolkata and Chennai.
"We can't take different routes for modernising Chennai and Kolkata airports. If we decide to follow the JV route - similar to the one taken for Delhi and Mumbai airports - for modernising Chennai, then even Kolkata will have to be developed through the same route. The meeting will finalise the route to be followed with Chennai and Kolkata,"Patel said.
Government, he said, will also fix the deadlines for upgrading the two metro airports after this meeting.
While chief ministers of both the states are in favour of developing the airports through the JV route, Left leaders have been urging the government to let Airports Authority of India modernise the Kolkata airport without involve the private sector.
