Proposal for airport development at Deesa

Gandhinagar: Gujarat government is contemplating on reviving an old proposal for setting up a full-fledged airport at Deesa, in the bordering district of Banaskantha in North Gujarat which does not have any air link, though it is located strategically.
At present, Deesa has a small air base but it is non-functional as no airlines have shown any interest to operate their air taxi or small aircrafts even when it is near Mount Abu, a major hill resort, which does not have an air link and the tourists have to rush to Udaipur or Ahmedabad to catch a flight to other destinations.
At present, the state has at least 10 airports, including an international airport at Ahmedabad and other domestic airports at Vadodara, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Porbander, Bhuj, Kandla, Keshod and the one being developed at Surat.
However, there is not a single airport in the north Gujarat region.A senior official of the state civil aviation department, confirmed that the proposal to develop an airport at Deesa has been pending with the civil aviation ministry.
