Politicians are increasingly getting free upgrades on flights, it emerged yesterday.
Growing numbers of MPs regard the upgrades to Club and First Class as a routine perk of the job.
The Register of MPs' Interests shows that some of the most senior MPs - including Gordon Brown and Jack Straw - have benefited.
It shows that the Chancellor obtained free upgrades for his wife Sarah and their son John on Virgin Atlantic flights to Washington DC, New York and Sydney in September last year.
Keith Vaz, the former Labour minister, said he was upgraded to First Class by Air India on flights to and from India last December.
Mr Straw, his wife Alice and his daughter Charlotte were also upgraded from World Traveller Plus to Club Class by British Airways on a flight from Johannesburg to London.
In February this year Tessa Jowell, the Culture Secretary, was upgraded to World Traveller Plus by BA when she flew out to Florida.
Sir Menzies Campbell, the Liberal Democrat leader, was upgraded to first class on a BA flight from Washington to London last July while on 'parliamentary business'.
British Airways yesterday denied that MPs always receive free upgrades.
