Visakhapatnam: Vizag is in for better air connectivity with a number of airlines showing a keen interest in operating flights to this fastest growing port city on the Coromandel Coast.
Silk Air, a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, is ready to operate direct flights from Visakhapatnam to Singapore. Malaysian, Thailand and Sri Lankan airlines are also keen on operating flights to the city, according to N Janardhan Reddy, MP.
Visakha Air Travellers’ Association (VATA) has written to Spice Jet, Kingfisher and Go Air seeking direct flights to Kolkata and other major cities from Vizag.
Association president and Institute of Transport Management Director D Panduranga Rao told this paper that he hoped of better air links and observed that night landing facility was crucial.
VATA and Air Passengers Association of India are mounting pressure on the Civil Aviation Ministry to augment the facilities at Visakhapatnam airport. They are also striving for introduction of new services.
APAI Vizag area chairman D Varada Reddy said there was a strong possibility of introduction of direct flights to Kolkata, Bangalore and Port Blair.
