India to set up ST radars & cut airline fuel costs

Bangalore: India is considering setting up a string of ten to 12 stratosphere-troposphere (ST) radars at a cost of Rs 100 crores in different institutions and universities, top atmospheric research officials said.
These are expected to help improve weather forecast and enable airline operators to cut fuel costs by up to ten per cent using the data generated by them, the officials said.
Director of the National Atomospheric Research Laboratory D Narayana Rao said the Department of Science and Technology has forwarded a proposal on establishing these observatories to the Planning Commission which is expected to give its approval soon.
On civil aviation application of ST radars, the data generated by them, particularly in relation to head and tail winds, would enable pilots, provided with information real-time, to switch the flight path appropriately leading to airline operators to cut fuel costs.
