AIRASIA Bhd, said it will seek to fly to southern China and the east coast of India as it expands routes following an order last week for 40 single-aisle A320 planes.
The airline is seeking to create hubs in Thailand's Chiang Mai and eastern Malaysia, Tony Fernandes, AirAsia chief executive officer, said in an interview in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Fernandes has been expanding AirAsia's fleet, cutting fares and adding surcharges to help counter the rise in oil prices and keep its lead over at least 18 other rival carriers in the region of 500 million people. AirAsia agreed last week to buy the 40 A320 planes from Airbus SAS valued at as much as US$2.6 billion (RM9.59 billion), with an option to acquire as many as 30 more.
