Pune: A decision on whether the city could go ahead with the proposed single-runway airport at Chakan or whether the project should be shifted to some other site will be taken soon.
Speaking to reporters here on Sunday, defence minister Pranab Mukherjee said a meeting on the issue would be called in New Delhi soon. Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar, civil aviation minister Praful Patel and Pune MP Suresh Kalmadi will attend the meeting.
"I will fix the date soon," Mukherjee said. The project, in a limbo for over five years and which was initially positioned as an international airport, was cleared in principle by the Indian Air Force (IAF).
However, it ran into trouble after the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) insisted on fulfilment of the two-runway norm.
