New Delhi: Acknowlegding the severe human resource crunch in the aviation industry, the government is planning to increase the tenure of foreign pilots from one year to three years, civil aviation ministry sources said.
The step is being mooted to help the aviation sector meet the growing requirement for pilots following the boom in the sector. The sector has seen over 50% growth in the domestic front. The traffic has grown to 128.58 lakh in January-May 2006 from 85.11 lakh during the corresponding period last year. According to Directorate General Civil Aviation, there are about 250 foreign pilots in India. Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation, Indian sub-continent and middle-east, ceo Kapil Kaul said the move will bring down the cost of acquisition of pilots and bring in more stability in the industry as this would allow the airline companies to plan their operations.
