Frankfurt: Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Europe's second-biggest airline, earlier today announced a new route between Frankfurt and Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta, saying it will make Lufthansa the top operator of flights between Europe and India.
The airline, posted a 58 percent surge in second- quarter profit as traffic was bolstered by soccer fans flying to Germany for the World Cup tournament.
Net income rose to 183 million euros ($231 million) from 116 million euros a year earlier, according to calculations based on a statement the Cologne, Germany-based carrier released today. Sales increased 13 percent to 5.15 billion euros from 4.55 billion euros.
Lufthansa, which releases a full earnings report tomorrow, increased traffic by 0.9 percent in the second quarter as the World Cup's mid-June start helped a 6.7 percent gain in European demand.
