BAA, the British airports operator, today said passenger traffic rose 3.9 per cent to 13.9 million in June, a record for the month, as flights to the fast-emerging economies of India and China soared.
Passengers to India, BAA's fastest-growing route, jumped 55.4 per cent year-on-year while traffic to China climbed by 49 per cent.
British Airways, the biggest carrier at Heathrow, and its main competitor, Virgin, have both increased services to India in the past year, introducing flights to cities such as Bangalore to tap traffic to the hubs of the boom in Indian IT services. BAA now has 14 daily departures to India, up from 8 a year ago.
Travel to India and China helped to offset a drop in European charter traffic, which fell 7.5 per cent.
