Singapore plans to further liberalize air service agreements with China, India and countries within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to preserve the city-state's status as a hub.
Changi, Asia's sixth-busiest airport, must continue to upgrade and adapt its services and facilities amid increasing competition from newer and bigger facilities around the region, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew said in a speech at Changi's 25th anniversary dinner late on Saturday.
Changi, which is estimated to account for almost 10 percent of the country's economy, is seeking to tap increasing air travel demand in a region where at least 18 discount carriers have set up shop since 2001. The city-state has been expanding and upgrading its facilities at Changi to ward off competition from rivals in cities such as Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Dubai.
