Sepang: Equipped with three flight simulators, AirAsia is poised to turn its pilot training academy into a regional one.
Two of the simulators for Airbus 320, costing US$10 million (RM37 million) each, were launched by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy today (Aug 14, 2006).
The third, for the Boeing 737, was a second-hand one.
AirAsia chief executive officer Datuk Tony Fernandes said three more Airbus simulators will be installed next year (2007).
He confirmed that the academy has received requests from China, India, Middle East and Philippines airlines for the pilot training but did not say when they will be taken in.
He said the low-cost carrier will take delivery of 23 Airbus soon and about 230 pilots are needed to operate the planes. They will be trained at the academy.
