Hyderabad: After a five-day wait to see their son, Mohammad Shafiq's family finally heaved a sigh of relief when the 23-year-old landed at Hyderabad airport on Tuesday evening.
Earlier in the day — when it was still uncertain whether Shafiq would be allowed by immigration officials in Mumbai to return to Hyderabad — the family was contemplating moving the Bombay High Court against their son's "illegal detention".
The family alleged that Shafiq had been harassed not only by immigration authorities in London but also, and perhaps more, in Mumbai.
Since Monday, the family had been waiting for Shafiq to land in Hyderabad. They were told that he would be taking the evening Indian Airlines flight from Mumbai.
However, when he didn't land on Monday, the family enquired only to be told that he had been detained by immigration officials in Mumbai.
"He was in illegal custody for more than 24 hours," said Shafiq's brother-in-law Veqar Hussain.
