Mumbai/New Delhi: Mumbai is finally cruising towards its second airport—a brand new one at that, in Navi Mumbai.
The International Civil AviationOrganisation (ICAO) has given the green signal for construction of the Greenfield airport, paving the way for the government to finalise bid documents and invite tenders from private consortia.
"ICAO have said that it's feasible to have an airport at Navi Mumbai," said N Ramarao, managing director of the City Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), which has been given the responsibility of developing Navi Mumbai airport by the state government.
The new airport—expected to be constructed at a cost of Rs 2,500 crore in the first phase itself—will be built after a consortium comprising CIDCO, the state government, the Airports Authority of India and a private bidder is formed, on terms and conditions similar to the Hyderabad and Bangalore airport projects.
