Vasco: A flock of birds have been seen hovering dangerously over the Dabolim airport in recent times, after being attracted to garbage being dumped at an open site barely 100 metres from the airport terminal.
The lackadaisical attitude of the Airport Authority of India (AAI) to tackle the problem of garbage dumped outside the Dabolim airport terminal, in violation of AAI guidelines, has only compounded the problem.
“As per the AAI rules, dumping of garbage in open spaces is prohibited within a 10-km radius of the airport terminal”, explained Air Traffic Controller George Menon.
The garbage disposal site just outside the airport, was filled with vegetable waste, cups, milk packets and other garbage.
Besides being a major irritant to pilots who are steering the planes to and from the runway, the birds have posed a major threat to the safety of the passengers, crew and the aircraft.
