Indian national carrier Air India has completely lifted restrictions on hand baggage with immediate effect.
The airline's manager for Bahrain and Jordan, M N Naik, confirmed to the GDN there would also be no restrictions on carrying duty fee purchases onboard aircraft.
The decision follows a directive from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Safety (BCAS) in New Delhi, which was received in Bahrain yesterday.
"There was immense pressure from the passengers and loyal Air India customers that these restrictions were out of place," Mr Naik said.
"We took a proactive approach, through our regional office in Dubai, and communicated our concern to our headquarters in Mumbai."
Dubai-based Air India Gulf regional director, Sanjeev Talwar, was quoted in the GDN on Sunday as saying that a relaxation of the rules was expected this week.
