Air passengers frown at fuel surcharge hike

Mumbai: The Air Passenger Association of India (APAI) is up in arms against the airlines for increasing the fuel surcharge from Rs 650 to Rs 750 that came into effect from Tuesday last. The APAI is all set to take up the issue with the Civil Aviation Ministry soon.
With the Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices spiralling the airlines have progressively hiked the fuel surcharge.
“APAI will approach the Ministry and urge it to issue a directive to mandate that airlines compute the surcharge based on the distance travelled, rather than slap a flat rate across sectors,” said Vijay Bobby, APAI spokesperson. To illustrate, he said that a passenger travelling from Mumbai to Pune pays the same amount towards fuel surcharge as a passenger travelling between Mumbai and Kolkata.
