Chennai: Gold coins weighing 2496 grams and numbering 308 and 6650 Euros and a dozen mobile phones, altogether valued at about Rs 25 lakh, were seized from an air passenger, who arrived at the airport here by a Lufthansa airlines flight today, a senior customs officer said.
Customs Commissioner, Airport C Rajan, told newsmen that an Air Intelligence Unit official, who was on surveillance duty, noticed the passenger, who had arrived from Frankfurt, moving in a suspicious manner.
The passenger was intercepted and a check of his baggage yielded the gold coins, valued at Rs 20,46,720, Euros equivalent to Rs 3,81,045 and mobile phones valued at Rs 64,000. The passenger was detained for questioning.
