Mumbai: By 2010, over 25 per cent of the 400-odd mint-fresh airplanes that will take to the Indian skies, will offer passengers a variety of infotainment options—including movies, live television, music, soap operas, and games—thanks to airlines warming to the idea of Inflight Entertainment (IFE) on their domestic routes.
It was liquor baron Vijay Mallya’s Kingfisher Airlines that first brought IFE with personalised video screens to the Indian skies/ Now, Jet Airways, Indian and Air India have also announced plans to offer similar entertainment content on their flights
Flag carrier Air India - it has signed a US $ 70 million deal for IFE with Thales - will have the system for long-haul flights.
Francois Dupont, Regional Director, Thales dubs the current Indian love affair with IFE as ‘‘unique’’. ‘‘In Europe, which is probably the size of India, it’s not very common to see IFE on domestic flights. India is clearly way ahead of its time,’’ says Dupont.
