Thiruvananthapuram: A memorandum of understanding was inked here Tuesday to set up a state-of-the-art Rs.247.3 million perishable cargo centre at the Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) in Kochi.
The centre is expected to be ready by March next year and would be set up jointly by CIAL, which is putting in Rs.115.3 million, and the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), which is investing Rs.132 million.
The agreement was inked between the CIAL chief Sriram Bharat and K.S. Mani of APEDA.
The civil works of the centre has already begun and would occupy a space of 25,000 sq ft. The centre is designed to handle 25,000 metric tonnes of cargo, comprising vegetables and similar produce every year.
