Victims of the 1985 Air India Flight 182 bombing will be honoured with a memorial plaque that lists their names in Stanley Park.
However, the park board has capped the amount of money that can be devoted to the memorial at $160,000, with the remaining $640,000 to be applied to Ceperley Park renovations and a consultation fee.
Comm. Allan De Genova told the Straight after an October 2 board meeting that he’s happy the cap was put in place as it means the memorial portion does not gobble up money that should be used to renovate an aging playground and amenities at the park space.
“I’m happy,” De Genova said after the meeting. “Now we know we’re going to honour the families and still get a playground that we want.”
The federal Conservative government and the B.C. Liberals agreed to split the $800,000 cost, and on August 11, federal public works minister Stockwell Day and B.C. Attorney General and Multiculturalism Minister Wally Oppal attended a joint groundbreaking ceremony in the park.
