Varanasi: Sensation gripped sensitive Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Babatpur area here after a rifle went off inside a Qualis car, injuring an elderly woman.
The SUV, bearing the number plate MH 08-2435, sped off before police and CISF personnel could reach there on hearing the gunshot, police sources said.
Administrative and airport officials had begun the investigation based on the statements of eye witnesses. Police and intelligence personnel had launched a massive operation to trace out the car and the injured woman.
According to information, three men and two woman had come to the airport at around 12.30 pm to receive a passenger from Delhi by Jet Airways flight. The flight landed at 12. 50 pm and a little while later the guest boarded the car. Suddenly people heard a sound of bullet from the car and later found a woman injured inside.
Commotion prevailed at the airport, bringing the security personnel of Central Industrial Security Force on their toes.
