When Tata Consultancy chief executive Subramaniam Ramadorai met Qantas senior managers in Sydney less than a fortnight ago it was the final move in a five-year chess game during which one of the nation's biggest IT shops was gradually phased out.
Last week's announcement that the airline would try to shave $100 million off its costs by outsourcing 340 jobs to TCS and Satyam Computer Services did not come as a surprise to anyone involved in the industry because staff from the two outsourcers had spent the past few months scoping the airline's IT systems.
Unions say the deal is likely to include operational systems such as logistics, air logs and parts ordering; marketing and sales systems such as the Qantas frequent flyer database; and health and emergency response tools such as the CarePlus disaster management system.
The unions expect the qantas.com website to be part of the outsourcing, as well as inflight management, load control, staff travel systems and email.
