Radisson saga: I-T check on IAS officer's role

Hyderabad: In a new twist to the Radisson saga, the income-tax (I-T) department is investigating the role of a Union Territory-cadre IAS officer who has served in a senior position in the Mizoram administration.
The officer, who belongs to Andhra Pradesh, had disappeared from a hotel in Hyderabad after he got wind of the fate that had befallen Radisson hotel managing director Ramesh Kapoor.
Kapoor and his son were detained by income-tax officials on Friday as soon as they disembarked from an Indian Airlines flight from Delhi. The duo had landed in Hyderabad with Rs 2.8 crore to hand it over to the IAS officer.
Carrying cash — howsoever large the amount may be — is not a crime.
"Only that it should be accounted for," an official said.
X-rays can only point out that a cash is being carried but the amount can be ascertained only on checking. I-T officials never conduct the physical checking at the embarking point, because the person being searched might miss the flight. I-T's air intelligence unit has been active since 1996, looking for transfer of "hot money".
