Resurfacing of Pune airport to begin from June

Pune: Passenger traffic in and out of the Pune airport at Lohegaon may be affected from June next year for six months as the Indian Air Force is in the final stages of drawing up a plan to resurface the runway. The resurfacing — carried out last in 1987 — will be done in a phased manner and may also cause a temporary closure of the airport.
A detailed plan of work, which would decide the exact level of curbs on civilian flights, is presently being worked out and will be made public well in advance for commuters’ convenience.
The Air Force is also looking at carrying out an extension of the runway from the current 8,300 feet to 10,500 feet along with the resurfacing. Sources say that both works will be combined to minimise disruption of air traffic.
