New Delhi: With Tamil Nadu deciding to give the work of modernising the Chennai airport to private companies, the Left parties today demanded that states should not have a say on how to improve airports.
At the UPA-Left coordination committee meeting, the Left leaders asked the government to allow only the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to modernise airports. Finance Minister P Chidambaram, however, said the states should have a say since they were the ones to give land.
Earlier in the day, CPI(M) Politburo member Sitaram Yechury met Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel to protest the privatisation of more airports.
The meeting came in the backdrop of Left allegation that the government was going back on its word that all airports except Mumbai and Delhi would be modernised by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
