Mumbai: Sources say the medical set-up at Mumbai airport is woefully inadequate to deal with a serious problem that any of the 50,000 passengers who use the airport every day might have.
There are only three medical inspection rooms between the airport’s four terminals, and only two of these function round-the-clock—one at international terminal 2-A and the other at domestic terminal 1-B. The third room, at terminal 2-C, is open between 8 pm and 8 am.
At any given time, one patient can be looked after. Also, the airport has only five doctors on its rolls, who take turns to work in 12-hour shifts. ‘‘Apart from them, there is a panel of doctors who are available. Only, they aren’t on the rolls,’’ said an MIAL spokesperson.
But all this is set to change, promises MIAL, as the airport goes for an upgrade in tune with Mumbai’s Shanghai dreams.
