New Delhi: Passengers flying in and out of Delhi in the foggy months of December and January should brace themselves for flight delays and overcrowding at the small terminals here. Delhi International Airport (P) Ltd (DIAL) chief operating officer (COO) Ioannis Papastefanou on Tuesday admitted that things would improve mainly from 2008 — when IGI has another CAT-III B compliant runway and an interim domestic terminal.
But he added that many steps would be taken to reduce passenger discomfort .
At present, there's only one runway that can be used when visibility is down to 50 metres in dense fog and the congested terminals get terribly overcrowded.
Moreover, very few domestic airlines have pilots trained to use CAT-III B system. Once visibility falls below 50 metres, all operations would have to be suspended as even CAT-III B can't handle that situation. According to IGI Met director R K Jenamani, heavy fog could hit IGI mid-December and the problem could remain till January-end.
