New Delhi: A year after its plans got into problems, premier Indian carrier Jet Airways has now finally received security clearance from the State Department to fly to the United States.
The carrier, which faced resistance from a US namesake that accused the Indian airline of having underworld links, also received the US Transportation Department clearance for the service, subject to approval of their flight schedules and clearance of its pilots.

Indian agencies still waffle
The clearance, a result of suo-motu action
by the US, has come despite the Indian
government failing to get back over security
related queries raised by the US.
US authorities had written to the Civil
Aviation Ministry following allegations that
Jet Airways had links with the underworld
and Al-Qaeda. The Ministry forwarded
the letter to the External Affairs Ministry
for further action. The matter was then
handed over to intelligence agencies and the
Enforcement Directorate for a response.
Till date, there has been no word from these
agencies.The go-ahead given now is a result
of an independent inquiry carried out by
the US Embassy. It’s learnt that Washington
also obtained a report from the CIA.

".. the airline has been cleared to fly to the US after it works out the operational details like flight timings, schedules, slots and other issues", a US embassy spokesperson told a news agency here.
The DoT clearance followed a green signal from the US State Department, which probed a complaint by a US-based company of the same name alleging that the Indian carrier had links with terrorist masterminds like Dawood Ibrahim and outfits like al Qaeda.
