Who moved my chicken tikka?

The news that one of India's leading private airlines serves only vegetarian food to Indian passengers flying between Mumbai and Gujarat — has stirred a controversy. And even strict vegetarians say such a rule is discriminatory and goes against the basic principles of the Constitution.
Sanchita Rann, a 34-year-old executive, who's a non-vegetarian, has often been served vegetarian food on flight — but she wasn't aware that a foreigner travelling with her was 'entitled' to a non-veg fare! "How can any self-respecting Indian do this?" she says.
Travel agents too say this isn't fair. But some like Shreya Gupta, manager of a travel agency in Ahmedabad, feels that with a majority of passengers being vegetarian, it's normal for airlines to serve vegetarian food.
"Agreed that a good many people in Gujarat are vegetarian but that does not mean those who are not should be deprived. Such practices cannot be justified," says frequent flyer Arihant Shah.
An official of government owned 'Indian' (formerly Indian Airlines) admits that they too do not serve non-veg dishes in the Mumbai-Gujarat sector. "This is because as per norms we don't serve any non-vegetarian snacks in short flights of less than 55 minutes," he says.
