Govt must ratify Montreal Convention: Aviation experts

New Delhi: Aviation experts today asked the government to expedite ratification of the Montreal Convention governing the liability of airlines, saying it would bind the ever-growing number of Indian carriers to international rules relating to compensation.
"Otherwise, we may let Indian lives go cheaper" than those of many foreign nations, Sanat Kaul, who earlier represented India at the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), said at a conference here.
Pointing toward the burgeoning aviation market, he said if a foreigner whose country has ratified the convention dies in an air accident, his next of kin would get a compensation close to Rs 50 lakh compared with about one-tenth of that to be paid to relatives of an Indian national who gets killed in the air accident.
