New Delhi: The civil aviation ministry has finalised the draft policy on ground handling which seeks to bring in at least three players to offer these services at airports across India, civil aviation minister Praful Patel said on Thursday. This will lead to more competition in the Rs.1,000-crore market for ground-handling and lead to improvement in the quality of services available to airlines and passengers. The note is likely to be sent to the Union Cabinet early next year for approval.
Under the policy, the government will seek to attract three players to undertake ground handling operations — the first will be an independent operator and the second would be the airport operator concerned while the third would be Air-India, Indian or a joint venture formed by these public sector carriers. The airport operator could be a private player like the GMR-run DIAL or the Airports Authority of India (AAI) which runs most airports across the country.
