'Have separate X-ray for checking liquids'

New Delhi: Following the August 9 foiled mid-air terror bid in London, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has issued recommendations for screening liquids, gels and aerosols to be taken on board aircraft. Among other things, it has advised its member states to allow passengers to take liquids only in container with a capacity of up to 100 ml in transparent plastic bags and ask them to leave behind even partially filled bigger bottles — something already being practised at Indian airports, including IGI.
The guidelines issued last Monday in Montreal suggest that exemptions should be made for medicines, baby milk or food and special dietary requirements. "An appropriate means of verifying the nature of such liquids will need to be available," the agency says. It has asked all the 189 member states, including India, to create their own list of prohibited items.
There's some relief from the blanket ban on carrying liquor at some airports globally. The agency says that countries may allow liquor bottles from such shops to be carried in sealed plastic bags with a proof that the purchase was made from that airport's outlet. "At IGI, a passenger can buy liquor from duty-free shops and keep the receipt. The bottle is given to him or her at the aerobridge," said an official.
