Low-cost carrier gives a price jolt

Thiruvananthapuram: Increase in airfare by 140 to 172 per cent by a low-cost carrier operating from the State capital to the metro cities of Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi during the peak Christmas season has come as a jolt.
The fares charged by the low-cost carrier to three metro cities is above the normal fares fixed by the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for travelling in flights like that of the Indian Airlines, travel industry sources said.
The hike in airfare by the low-cost carrier has been implemented flouting all norms and taking advantage of the heavy demand for seats, it has been pointed out. Fliers say the hike is not justifiable in any way as even food and water is not provided on the flights. Veena Anantharaman and her daughter, Keerthana had to pay Rs.20,000 each through credit card for securing ticket in the economy Class from Mumbai to Thiruvananthapuram on December 22.
This was at a time when the normal fare in economy class in the umbai-Thiruvananthapuram sector is just Rs. 11,565.
The family has decided to take up the matter with the airline and DGCA.
