Mumbai: The Mumbai airport developers are now on their toes, attempting to get back as much precious real estate as possible from fringe users.
When Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) realised that various service providers—from airlines and cargo operators to fuel suppliers and ground handling agencies—occupy a 253-acre chunk with over half their leases expired, eviction notices were quietly despatched.
Also being politely asked to relocate is the western region headquarters of the Airports Authority of India and the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security. Talks are also underway with Indian and Air India to surrender much of the space they occupy at the airport.
In fact, the housing colonies of the two public sector companies alone are sprawled over 102 acres.Recently, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority was roped in to clear 262 acres of airport land encroached by slums. But if these measures are any indication, MIAL wants much, much more land freed up.
