A city businessman who was busted after customs officers intercepted a package from India containing nearly a kilogram of opium was sentenced to four years in prison yesterday.
Sarbjit Kahlon, 33, earlier pleaded guilty to importing narcotics. In exchange for the guilty plea, similar charges against his wife, Satwinder Kahlon, 27, were withdrawn.
Federal prosecutor Greg Rice told court that opium importing cases are very rare in this jurisdiction.
Court earlier heard a package sent from the Punjab province in India containing 978 grams of opium was seized by Canada Customs at an airport in Montreal.
The parcel, without its illegal contents, was sent on to its Edmonton destination with the help of RCMP and on Jan. 11, 2005, Satwinder Kahlon was arrested upon delivery.
Armed with a warrant, Mounties searched the Mill Woods home and confiscated about $7,200 in cash and an unsafely stored 9-mm handgun.
