New Delhi: Airports Authority of India (AAI) plans to have independent subsidiaries for various operations such as ground handling, maintenance, repair & overhaul (MRO), cargo operations and designing & development of airport.
These subsidiaries will be run by professional managers, roped in from schools like the IIMs, as independent profit-centres. Each subsidiary will have a separate profit & loss account and a CEO.
Apart from structural changes in the organisation, the government is also considering to improve its management.
Further, to enhance the autonomy enjoyed by AAI, civil aviation ministry has submitted its proposal to the commerce department seeking mini-ratna status for the state-owned airport operator. Mini-ratna status would empower AAI to invest Rs 500 crore in a single project without seeking a prior government approval.
