New Delhi: The Delhi government's environment department has asked Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi (IIT-D) to carry out an extensive study on noise pollution in residential colonies around Delhi airport and also in areas falling in the descending path of planes.
The decision came after some senior citizens living in the affected colonies complained that the loud noise of planes at night makes it difficult for them to sleep.
The complainants have cited the example of airports in the West which are closed during nights unlike the airports in India, including IGI, which are open all night long.
Even the National Committee on Noise Pollution Control, set up by CPCB, in its meeting last month felt that India should have laws to restrict night flights. According to ambient noise standards, people are supposed to have a 'quiet' night from 10 am to 6 am.
